Jerseys Sustainable Future- an Election 2026 Choice
James Jeune JEP interview with me after I stood down as Environment Minister in 2022 highlights how ensuring future sustainability is vital for Jersey , limited by our densely populated 46 square miles .
He sets out the challenges which I set in 2022 for our future States and Government ; Renewable energy ,Carbon reduction , waste reduction , improved potable water standards , reduced pollution , maintaining strong protection for our Coasts and Countryside , biodiversity, Urban area Improvements.
Progress has been disappointing .
Thinking Strategically , Jersey’s next government should aim to live within our means as an island and not try to reinvent itself as some grand economic powerhouse, which would put our environment at risk of long term damage.
Jersey is still a relatively unspoilt beautiful island despite the huge economic growth we have successfully accommodated .This didn’t happen by accident , its is the result of decades of visionary States members who put in place successive Island Plans and policies to conserve Jersey. Yes we should amend some policies in detail, but the Plan’s purpose needs to remain firm. We need to keep it that way .
