My Role in our new Hospital

Since July 2017 I been actively involved in our hospital.

I represented at the Planning inquiry for Jersey’s new Hospital  last October as the proposed scheme for Gloucester St would have done irreparable damage to the urban environment of St Helier and the lives of residents of surrounding streets. That scheme was rejected after the Planning Inspectors rejection.

I was part of a group of informed citizens led by the late Sir Nigel Broomfield and campaigned for a alternative site for the hospital development to avoid eight years of noise and disruption to rebuilding the existing hospital. I was elected as Minister in June 2018 and had to leave the group

The second application for Gloucester St redevelopment was submitted by the Ministers in early 2018 , my withdrawing and having no part in the process . It fell to me to make the decision after the Planning Inquiry. It was improved but was still damaging. I rejected it despite strong criticism .

In 2019 I issued detailed supplementary Planning guidance for the new development providing criteria to gain consent.

In 2021 he third Planning application was submitted this time for an Overdale hospital development , I took not part on that process. Again it fell to me to determine the application after the Inspectors report . In May 2022 I approved the development with a Planning Obligation agreement to secure  infrastructure . Sadly after I stood down , that permission was not implemented. We still have no hospital.
